This year’s Museum Night will take place under the motto “Freedom” on Saturday, May 18th, from 4 pm till midnight.
After great victories, comes freedom and that is why the frame of the 16th Museum Night is exactly that - conquering and practicing freedom in the widest sense - from artistic expression and education to the freedom of thought and movement... although freedom is often taken for granted today, it is a fact that we appreciate freedom only when we lose it", the event organizers said. "It is no secret that freedom as a state of mind has always been a guiding idea and inspiration of the artistic rebellion. That way, the tight grip and bans, that were often a part of social norms, become a creative vent, and art a mirrored society"
During the Museum Night, there will be sixty locations all over Belgrade open for public. Many of them will be opened for this occasion only.
A unique and exclusive Untold Stories tour is a result of a traditional partnership with the national sponsor, Viasat History channel. The tour will enable the visitors to take in a little bit of freedom of the hippie era and the iconic Woodstock, to get to know what Belgrade looked like during the Kingdom of Yugoslavia period, to re-examine what they know about old inns in our capital – these unique cultural monuments or to enjoy the free spirit of Belgrade nightlife in the 1980s. Ethnographic Museum visitors will be able to explore the amazing world of mirrors while playing with old superstitions, customs, beauty and vanity; artistic freedoms will be explored on the Bitef Theatre scene, while Faculty of Music will organize a glimpse behind the scenes.
A special treat for the biggest fans! Premieres, grand openings and long-forgotten stories retold will make for another memorable adventure that is the Museum Night.
This time we will traditionally discover new spaces and tell unspoken stories, and for one night, the entire city will become a museum.
Museum Night is held with support of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia. It is a unique cultural spectacle in more than 120 cities around the world, including Belgrade since 2005. The first Museum Night was held in five Belgrade museums and galleries, managed to animate more than 4,000 visitors, while in the next fourteen years this number increased to an incredible 500,000 visits in almost 200 cultural institutions, in more than 60 cities and towns throughout Serbia. In the European Museum Night last year, more than 3,000 museums participated in 30 countries.
